Training in five steps:

1. Record your word — hold button, beep, say it clearly, release, double beep confirms
2. Place it where it makes sense — "outside" at the door, "treat" in the kitchen, "play" where play happens
3. Model it yourself — when it's walk time, press the walk button before you do it. Repeat until they connect the concept.
4. Reward every press — even if it seems accidental. Especially if it seems accidental. Accidents become patterns.
5. Be patient — every dog gets there at their own pace. The ones who take longer somehow end up with the most to say once they figure it out.

The honest truth about button #8: You will record something thoughtful for button eight. "Cuddle" or "outside adventure" or "I need you." Your dog will press it seventeen times in the first hour and you will discover what it means to them. It will not be what you recorded it for. It will be correct anyway.

Biscuit started with 4 buttons. Within two weeks "outside" was being pressed at 5:47am daily with a consistency that suggested he had set an alarm. We got him 8 buttons.
